A cute, slow moving manga that will make you smile every chapter. Occasionally, makes you scream internally (of joy).
I pretty much exclusively read manga that has romance or a lot of cute, fluffy moments. This manga has both, which is why I love it and I believe anyone who enjoys cute, wholesome characters who actually develop and get closer to each other will love reading it as well!
What is Kubo-san about?
It is a story that focuses on two high-school students, Junta Shirashi and Nagisa Kubo. Shirashi is a boy who lacks presence, which results in people not being able to notice him even if they are right next to him. Kubo is a girl who can actually see Shirashi, often playfully teases him, and very obviously has a crush on him.
What’s so good about Kubo-san?
A LOT.
The interactions between the main two characters is extremely cute. Shirashi doesn’t seem like he would be very interested in Kubo, but that changes pretty quickly. He’ll impress you in many different ways as he makes Kubo blush and fall more in love with him. Kubo’s teasing is both funny and adorable. In case you were wondering, her teasing is NOT in the same vein as the bullying you would see in something like “Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro.” She is constantly thinking about how to make Shirashi happy and will help him become more sociable along the way. They both develop a good amount over the course of the story.
The art style is pretty good. It’s not the best in the world, but you can tell how much effort the author put into drawing all characters and backgrounds. It’ll occasionally blend in some chibi styled art for funny moments, which actually works really well. Kubo’s blushes and pouts are some of the most adorable things I’ve ever seen in a manga before.
Another big draw to Kubo-san is that there is absolutely zero unnecessary drama. As someone who’s read a ton of romance manga, I hate drama that comes out of nowhere and ruins the flow of the story. Kubo-san has no love triangles or dumb misunderstandings. It keeps the cute and fun tone consistent all the way through. Kubo-san is very much a slice of life manga where some of the chapters are episodic, but a lot of them continue the same plotlines throughout the story.
Kubo-san is a weekly manga, so you can get your dose of wholesome romance every week. It definitely cheers me up and improves my mood every time I read a new chapter. At the time of writing this article, there are currently 75 chapters released and there is for sure going to be many more to come.
Wrapping things up
There’s not much more to say about Kubo-san without going into detail all the funny and cute things about the characters and story, but I think you (the reader) will appreciate it much more if I left those out so you can find them yourself. Normally, I dread waiting for new chapters every week for other manga. But with Kubo-san, I get excited waiting for the next one and I hope you will too!
